Both Plesk and cPanel are solid options, but it really depends on what you're looking for.

cPanel has been the industry standard for a long time — super stable, widely supported, and most hosting providers are already familiar with it. It's Linux-only though, so you're limited in that sense.

Plesk, on the other hand, supports both Linux and Windows servers. It's got a cleaner UI (especially for beginners), and it's very developer-friendly if you're working with things like Docker, Git, or Node.js.

In terms of demand, cPanel is still more popular overall, but Plesk has been growing steadily — especially among users who want more flexibility or are managing WordPress-heavy environments.

If you're running a typical shared hosting setup, cPanel might be the safer choice. But if you're doing custom VPS work or need Windows compatibility, Plesk could be the better fit.

try ISPConfig

its free and open source

works with nginx or apache2, your choice.
Yeah, I’ve heard good things about ISPConfig because its definitely solid for devs who are comfortable managing their own environment.

That said, it’s not really for everyone. The learning curve can be a bit steep compared to something like cPanel or Plesk, especially for beginners or people who just want to “set it and forget it.”

But for advanced users who want full control without the licensing fees, it’s a strong option for sure.

cPanel is not worth the new rates they've increased to.

I will add it is nice for when you're using shared web hosting though. For a vps or dedicated server, either no control panel or DirectAdmin.

cPanel is very active and have a broad users base, and their support team is also good, however being more famous, its also open to more vulnerabilities and people trying to exploit it, so for user friendliness and plugins support surey cPanel, however if you want a more secure server than Plesk (Though server security is also related to many other factors beside control panel too)

cPanel is mainly designed for Linux servers, while Plesk works with both Linux and Windows. If you’re using Linux, cPanel is usually the better choice since it offers strong performance, easier management for multiple sites, and advanced features for email, DNS, FTP, and backups.
