I think you have right, in most cases when you reach below 250k rank it's very profitable to sell ads for your own then and start to make bussines connections with sponsors.

Popadds are shit IMO for adult sites, I do still use them on my proxy networks.

As has been mentioned above juicyadds are pretty good, having said that I have within the last hour just removed my JA popunder and am trying plugrush for a few hours to see how they match up.
