IMO there's too much empty space at the top.

I hadnt realised that, it was the google +1 button not rendering properly and just showing a blank div, Ive removed it now.

Looks nothing like it. Thats like saying yahoo search looks like google search, Or Youtube looks like Vimeo. They offer the same service and run on basically the same engine so they are going to look similar.

I dont see the resemblance? They used a completely different layout and they show posts in a blog style format.
