This is probably a stupid question, but I am a bit curious; when will it become profitable to set up your own filesharingserver (like XFS) instead of using other PPD hosts out there?

I'm a bit lazy atm, so I don't upload much. I mainly upload small files, 30-300 mb, some of these could be split in two to double the hits. The files I uploaded in march had about 30-35.000 downloads in march. Many downloads are from same ip/user, so I don't get paid for all downloads, just the regular 1 ip/24 hrs..
And the older files, pre-march, also get some downloads.
Traffic is about 60/40 US-CA/EU. No idea how many is using adblock.
I could easily at least double downloads just to be a little more active.

So.. regarding server cost etc etc, how many non-adblocks downloads do you need pr month to break even, and even become profitable?

You should have a decent budget (5+ figures) before even think about it. Starting with zero will be hard these days. And with only PPD you need a lot of quality traffic you could monetize your file hosting service with selling advertising spots to 3rd parties or similar.

^ dunno what the guys are smoking but for your purpose you wouldnt even need more than a few hundred dollars. Obviously depending on how much you upload.

1) There are free filehosting scripts, but a decent one like XFS or yetishare will cost about $100-300 one time.
2) A server like this, if 24TB is enough for you

For the sake of cheapness, let's assume you buy Yetishare for 99$. You have a onetime cost of $99+$230 for the server. After that $230 per month for your server.

With an average CPM rate of $1 for those shitty networks, your 35.000 monthly downloads will amount to $70 per ad source. Last time I downloaded something it felt like a FUCKTON of different ad networks but preferably I would use 4. This amounts to $280 for a month, provided your downloads remain at 35.000. Obviously your files will no longer be "Rapidgator" or whatnot links, so much less downloads are expected.

Next step would be to limit the download speed and sell premium memberships. Congrats, you've just gone from small time criminal to tax evading illegal businessman. :P

Thanks for a decent answer, Maniacman. That give me a bit more wisdom and knowledge. :)
But holy smoke, 24TB hehe.. I have like 4-5 uploads a week, haven't even uploaded as much as 1 tb in total the past year :O)

^i think the above is based on the assumption that other people will be uploading to you? Not 100% sure, just guessing. Think this may be what's dividing the responses.

If you work for sales, work smart, if you work for clicks, work hard :-=
Nah not for me. Same work. No one would buy premium for a 50 mb file. They will rather wait for someone to download and repost it elsewhere. I prefer to offer fast download speed instead of listning to all the whining about premium and/or slow, crappy speed. :)

Well in that case you are looking for a 1TB server. You cost is not $50/month. ;)
