FTP question

When I upload a file using FTP sometimes the connection goes down and when I reconnect, the file is gone in the FTP client, the file is already in the "manage files" section in the website (file incomplete), so there's no way to resume the upload, what should I do if I want to upload 400mb and at 399mb the connection goes down? start all over again? :/
