AC3 supports proper 5.1 surround sound and AAC doesn't (as far as I know).

AAC is far superior than ac3,and it does support 5.1, but ac3 is kept for compatibility with older players.
AAC supports up to 96KHz sampling rates, and upto 48 channels
so, basically AAC is far better than ac3 it is a replacement for standard mp3, but on steroids.

aac is like x264. not wide range of devices(yet) but when its supported(which will be soon),its gonna rock!

i didn't mean to say that, i meant people still tend to use ac3 for "higher audio quality" maybe because aac is already popular for its high compression rather than its optimum potential.

AVI is just a container like mkv while x264 is a codec.

On Topic: AAC is currently the king of audio compression to quality. It has all that you need and has support of many devices.
