I see no point in them. They are usually a pain in the ass even to type out. Might as well just copy and paste the long link. Only reason I see to use them is if they hide the original link. And the reason I see that as pointless is you would use it for a download, and the download page will have the download URL. Like megaupload
Short links are useless and often lead to even more useless crap.
I'd rather have a direct link than some mutilated hidden-destination URL. I don't know about you but when I go somewhere, I like to know where i'm going.

I actually want to know what will I click, most of the people who use ******* and other link shorteners, e.g. on Twitter, some guy will use ******* to shorten the URL of some survey, and he will write in the twitter message "Get FREE PS3 here, and ******* link".
