Obviously the fanboys of each will bias towards them.
Personally though, I have a wii, PS3 and 360. Truthfully the PS3 is much, much better for my purposes.
It had an internet browser way before the 360, has slightly better graphics (visible in PS3-only games) and has better hardware. Also the online play is completely free yet equally as useful and works fine. Plus I can stream movies from my PC to it or I can play movies directly from my USB hdd. Oh and also the ps3 actually allows the installation of another OS (linux). Not to mention it already has blu-ray too. Microsoft can only continue in future by using blu-ray in a new xbox or the 360, they have to switch eventually.
Anyway, in my honest opinion, PS3 is better of the two. You'll find that 90% of the people who argue for xbox don't even have a PS3.

Thanx JmZ that makes a lot of sense. Another quick question guys soryy about my ignorance in these matters, but he only has a standard TV set not HD so I assume for both PS3 and XBox he would need a HD monitor to get the best visual experience is that correct ?

Nope not true. Both consols get generally the same games, where it differs is the exclusives. PS3 (sony) has announced I think something like 200+ exclusive titles for the ps3 within the next few years, surpassing 360 by a lot.
go with the xbox I got one myself and also owned a ps3 in the past but the xbox is much much better

The conclusion was a controversial one at the time. That the XBOX 360 pretty much owned in every category; price, performance, graphics, and game selection.
Maybe but think now,
Price = Similar. You pay a little more for a ps3 but you also get a blueray player.
Performance/Graphics = PS3 will load and run the game with slightly bette graphics at a slightly quicker pace. I own cod4 for both ps3 and 360 and the ps3 is a quicker version of the game. I an tests and saw it with my own eyes.
Game Selection = yes at one point, not anymore. Its a common misconception.

Killer on gamespot they had a simular thing, ill try to find the link. They took screenshots of the same place/spot of the game and the ps3 was slightly better. The ps3 can handle more but no it wouldnt make sense for the same game to be better on a system that can handle less.
