I disagree with most of the above. vBulletin was the best but when IPB released version 3 it was far better. vBulletin 4 is terrible. It's poorly coded and a resource hog. vBulletin 3 is ok but is now very old and will soon lose support so it's not a long term option. The company are also in serious financial trouble which has resulted in a lot of poorly coded and rushed updates leading to a lot of bugs and security issues.

If your not buying a licence and only expect your site to last a few months go with nulled vBulletin 3.8

If your not buying a licence and expect the site to last more than 6 months then use a nulled version of IPB.

If your not buying a licence and don't want to use a nulled script then go with phpbb. While MyBB and SMF are good they will never have the support or community that phpbb has.

If your buying a licence then go with IPB.

Any comments about XenForo?
XenForo is developed by two former vBulletin devs (one of them was the lead developer) that left after Internet Brands bought the company so this allowed them to learn from previous mistakes on vBulletin. Essentially, XenForo is kind of what vBulletin 4 was supposed to be (vb4 was going to be a complete recode, but IB decided it would be too costly and take too long, so it basically turned into adding a bunch of unnecessary bells and whistles and tacking on a higher price tag).

Good question.

I personally think it was over hyped and think it's too similar in coding to vBulletin. Ya it looks good in parts but it's like having an old tractor engine in a Ferrari. Looks good but going nowhere fast.

A major problem is has is it still doesn't have a big community behind it yet which are needed to provide lots of themes, mods and support particularly non licensed support which IPB and vBulletin have lots of in unofficial support sites.

What's even more of a problem is they are under huge legal pressure from vBulletin about copyright claims or similar legal challenges. This is putting a lot of people off buying it as it's future is unclear which puts it in more trouble as they don't have a growing community or money to develop it further.
