US government calls for ban of all cellphone use in cars
By John Callaham

If the National Transportation and Safety Board has its way, US citizens would be banned from talking on any cellphone or personal electronic devices while they are driving a moving vehicle. Today, the Washington Post reports that the NTSB will hold a press conference later today to go over the details of its recommendations.

The proposed ban on cellphone use while driving follows the completion of an investigation by the NTSB of a massive car pile up in Missouri in 2010 where two people died and 38 people were injured. One of the two people who was killed was the 19 year old driver of a pickup truck who either sent or received 11 text messages on his cellphone over a period of 11 minutes before his truck collided with a school bus full of children.

There is one exception to this recommendation. The NTSB says that cellphones and other similar devices can be used by drivers in emergency situations; Bluetooth devices are also excluded from the recommendation list.

While the board has no authority to create or enforce traffic and safety laws, its recommendations could influence state lawmakers into taking action. It's more than possible that a large number of US states, if not all of them, will draft laws that will follow the NTSB's proposals.

I agree with the ban, using phones while driving severely decreases your response time and causes a lot of the wrecks in the world. Honestly, that phone call/text is not worth your life or other peoples' lives.

They started that rule here in Canada about couple of months ago where they started issuing tickets if they catch you on your cellphone/handheld device for obstruction of not paying attention while driving lol so good to see States doing the same

US citizens became prisoners of democracy, while at the same time, they are being convinced, how everything their government is doing, is for their own good.
All I see is more and more bullshit coming out from that state...influencing whole wide world with their piles of crap politics.

What the hell...Does the government need to regulate all aspects of our lives? There is inherent danger to just living and the government cant control all of them. What if they start outlawing music in your car? I could make the argument that changing discs or volume takes your eyes off the road for longer than pressing a phone number. And music can be distracting and affect your ability to hear other cars, horns, etc...

We cant live in a bubble people...

Mindy trust.. the ban is fair. Cell phones are such a HUGE distraction. now i actually feel safe when i get into cars with friends

I'm sure that we are safer by not having cell phone use in the car, but how much safer? Is it significant enough to warrant an intrusion on our rights and freedom? What other things are dangerous that should be outlawed while driving?

- radio/music
- eating
- drinking
- talking to other passengers
- looking in your purse for change for a toll

All of these cause accidents, but thats part of life - the risk is minimal compared to the loss our right to personal freedom.

It seems like a minor point to link a ban on cell phones to the government taking away our rights, but it is. This is how it starts. This is why people dont mind being wire tapped or being molested at the airport. We're so used to the government making all of our decisions for us, especially in regards to 'safety' that we stop believing in our own ability to make choices and weigh risk.
