Subscription vs Ads

Which model do you think makes the most sense getting started and which method do you think will keep your website alive for the long run?

Subscription: Having users pay a monthly or yearly subscription so that they can view content or perform an action on your website.

Ads: Having companies pay for space on your website so they can promote their website or products.

I think subscription + ads because subscription will make them stay and ads will make them come.
