There is no rule in Google firm to leave a site if a new link found on the site or page. no matter which is external or internal.
Suppose: On 1 page have 5 links. 4 are internal (Yours) and 1 are external(Others). Google will cache your page at once a time in a month or some 2 months. So according to your point of view if google will coming back at the page which have 5 links 4-Internal(Yours) and 1 External(Others) So google will leave the page or site and going to 4 internal page and 1 external page ? (no its miss guiding)
rel="follow" link is a quality backlinking. its just a guartee that the site are authority and we are follower of this. All the social sites used google backlink concepts same as like you follow me at twitter, facebook and many others) but if you follow any hacker or porn maker guy so your friends will leave you and voting and maturity will down just because of 1 bad followers.
So use rel="nofollow" for them which you not like to follow or which are floap or in the propaganda.
following the good authorities will not impact to your SEO and results.
and if you seen Google blog, they are weekly posted articles which contain too many external follow URLs. same as Bing and Microsoft and MSDN
