Automatic resizing requires recreating the image with the specified dimensions. That is a process that requires server resources. It's a planned feature, but not at the moment. It's going to come when I go on the 'dev spree' sometime around late December 2010.

And a general update. The site images and assets (css/ico/font files) are now served from the Edgecast CDN.
