All skins are (infact, with IPB 3 they must be) based on the master skin set. Without Checkered you would have no Checkered skin to customize. And the Customized By replaces the credits of the original skin so that's why I added the give credits comment.
Don't let my opinion bug you though. I just personally can't stand it when people edit a few things and then do their best to cover up what it really is or who really did most of the work
