PlayStation 4 launch rumors: Price, photos, games

Is the next-generation PlayStation imminent? Rumors of the so-called "PS4" are at fever pitch. Sony is widely expected to announce its next video game console at a press event in New York City on Feb. 20.

Not much is known about the PS4, but a handful of rumors suggest that it will be cheaper than its predecessor, have cross-platform capabilities and may already have games lined up.

According to a report by U.K. newspaper The Times, Sony's new console could be priced at about $465. The original PS3 initially retailed for about $600. The newspaper cited "industry sources and leaked internal documents." However, the price has not been confirmed. The Times says that Sony is only "considering" that price point.

Gamers may also be able to stream games from the cloud and compete with each other even if they are not on the same console. The Wall Street Journal reports that the PS4 may let users play against other games that are using different hardware, like smartphones and portable devices. The Journal cites "people familiar with Sony's plans."

So-called leaked photos of the PS4's controller have already circulated online. The blog Destructoid has posted several photos of alleged PS4 controller that appear to have a touchscreen next to the directional pad and a Move censor between the trigger buttons. However, video game site IGN claims a "trusted source" says that while the photos are real, they are only prototypes.

There are no known confirmed game titles for the PS4 yet, however rumors have suggested that games are in development. The video game blog Joystiq reports that Finnish composer Ari Pulkkinen is said to be working on an "unannounced PS4 game." Pulkkinen has previously worked with game developers like Rovio, Housemarque and Frozenbyte.

We'll all find out by Wednesday night what Sony has planned for its next-generation console. The electronics giant will kick off its press event at 6 p.m. ET. Follow a live blog at GameSpot.com.
