Megaupload’s former hosting provider Leaseweb has deleted all Megaupload user data from 690 servers without warning. Petabytes of data and backups, mostly from European users, are now lost forever. Kim Dotcom is outraged by the scandal and says this is what the U.S. Government was hoping would happen all along. “I’m furious about this betrayal, and extremely sad,” Dotcom tells TorrentFreak.

Ever since the raids in January last year, the fate of Megaupload users’ personal files has remained uncertain.

It’s been a frustrating situation for the millions of affected users and one that has taken a turn for the worst today, with the news that one of Megaupload’s main hosting companies has decided to delete all the data they had stored.

Dutch hosting company Leaseweb has informed Kim Dotcom that all 690 servers have been wiped clean. This means that petabytes of data belonging to Megaupload users is now gone for good.

“This is a huge disaster,” Dotcom tells TorrentFreak, explaining that the servers mainly contained files from European users as well as the associated backups.

Leaseweb’s decision has come as a shock to the New Zealand-based entrepreneur, not least because Megaupload has been trying hard to reconnect users with their data. In fact, Dotcom’s lawyers specifically asked the hosting provider not to delete anything until the U.S. court comes to a decision.

“They deleted petabytes of data and did not warn us at all. Our legal team asked them multiple times not to delete the data while the U.S. court is deciding about the rights of our users,” Dotcom says.

“It’s such a betrayal. They could have given us some warning. We could have informed the court that a deletion is imminent. But Leaseweb did not even give us or our users a fair chance.”

Soon after the raid Megaupload’s legal team started to discuss the option of giving back users their uploaded data, but the U.S. refused all suggestions. Megaupload and the U.S. hosting company Carpathia did come to an agreement to hand over the servers, but the Government blocked this plan in court.

“This is what the U.S. government wanted all along. That’s why they seized all of our assets and would not even release funds to pay our hosting partners,” Dotcom now says.

The fate of the data stored at Carpathia is now in the hand of a U.S. judge, who still has to come to a decision. The hosting provider, meanwhile, is paying $9,000 per day out of its own pocket to store them.

“Carpathia has done the right thing and stored Megaupload servers at their own expense. That’s what Leaseweb should have done after making millions of profits from Megaupload,” Dotcom says.

“This was totally unnecessary and evil.”

Dotcom doesn’t know whether Megaupload can or will take steps against Leaseweb. The lawyers are looking into the matter, but Megaupload’s founder is most of all very sad and disappointed.

“All I can say right now is that everyone is very upset. This is the worst day since the raid for me because I was fighting every day to get users their data back. EVERY DAY!” Dotcom concludes.

I have been watching this from the start, Watching all the "dotcom fanboys" jumping on his dick was hilarious.
This has been blown way out of proportion by dotcom and his hate filled rage at the us.

Leaseweb made a statement which when you read it explains why they did it.

At the end of they day they have a business to run, And this was a business decision. I have nothing against them for doing it because i am not a moron.

dotcom Fanboys :hrhr:

Serious?!

Man if anyone Destroy your Million Dollar (LEGAL) Buisness you would act like he dont care if its USA or Not.

Simple Story

He has got most of his assets back why did he not try to get into an agreement with them to pay them some money or write them an I.O.U ?. Did he expect them to pay out the ass just for him, I don't think so.

This is all his fatasses fault not leasewebs. I'm getting tired of him walking around like a dictator he was throwing shots at leaseweb without hearing their side of the story.

What's all this rage, shadow?

Guy is not fighting one DMCA claim, but USA government, and huge lobby. Would you try to get your servers back, if you are accused in this case, without getting a legitimate court approval for such thing, and burry yourself deeper? He isn't pissed because of leaseweb, he's pissed because people lost their files, many people lost their jobs because they kept their backups in there. Little symphaty and appreciation that someone is fighting people's battle, not just his own, would be good. IF he's selfish fattass, like you're describing him ( I assure you it's jelaousy ) he wouldn't give a fuck about data. It's not all black and white, you know. I had nothing there, I lost nothing, but there's hundreds of people who did, if not thousands. Not to mention that evidence itself got destroyed.

Agree with you. If he is the cashwhore and dictator these ppl describe him to be, why would he even care about user's data and spend so much resources on getting them back ! i dont see any profit in it for him !

Some people are soooo biased against Dotcom that they dont see the whole picture at all !

I am not raging i fully admit what happened to him was not fair, But hey the Americans won't start a civil war so we have to deal with there bullshit till they do.

I just don't like the way he was throwing shots at leaseweb without their side of the story. Everyone started jumping on leaseweb throwing masses of hatred and threats to hack them because of it. Again they are a business they made a business decision. I understand he is pissed but from what leaseweb are saying he made little effort to actually protect that data (did you read my post above ?)

Who cares?

The Megaupload fight is over.

We now know what the US will go through to get what they want and the bigger issue is to what extent should this be dismissed. Dotcom is a narrow minded fuck who only cares about the small box of things.

People - LW started to delete the data when kimdotcom get arrested. It's nothing like they waited for his last billing date or anything. That day only kimdotcom not get arrested there was other 2 people too - who run the servers.
Kimdotcom only saying these because he got out and now he has mega.co.nz but still any-other company offering him random servers like LW. People got sympathize then maybe he has a chance to get FAST storage provider, if you don't know - many companies already said NO to Kimdotcom for servers.
Think like that - kimdotcom easily can go to the Sweden DC and get servers for his server but he trying on UK or NL or NZ (his current most servers from these countries) WHY? Also why since the begging why he with the LW? Because company like LW has the most powerful network and massive client list and the people do download or people from US - most of them use LW RDP or Servers and network from USA to LW is FAST because they are same.
But I don't think LW allow anything anymore. I'm not saying LW is right (because they started removing data from that hr) but kimdotcom is not looking for the data has been lost - he looking for his planet again!

It cost them $4.7 million to keep the files and they haven't been compensated yet for it and they weren't under any contract with the people that used megaupload.

If you want a backup source for your files than you should get a dedicated server or legit cloud storage network.
