I need a strong server for a movie tube

Hello everybody,i need a very strog server to host 720p and 1080p movies full.(about 4-12gb each).First i need a server to keep a good buffering and resist for 2-3k visitors per day and when appear more visitors i will upgrade it.Thank you! First i need sugestions from the ,,oldest" guys

P.S. I need servers who ignore DMCA and optional ddos attack protection

What sort of config are you after ?
Is it just for storage or you are planning to stream the movies from it.
If you are going to use it for streaming, you will need a strong connection and perhaps with 100 TB+ or unmetered Gbit bandwidth( Considering your 2-3k visitors will be viewing the videos).

Get at least a quad core server with enough hard disk space and prefer 4 disks in Raid 10.
Your budget will equally matter.

Yes 100TB is definitely the minimum requirement also as mentioned by Glenn to avoid I/O problems you have to have a H/W raid 10 may a setup with 4X1TB or 4X2TB as you will need a large storage space because of the size of files you mentioned.

Also a good CPU E3 series or better should be their in the machine.Before ordering the server do make sure that your provider allow streaming on 100TB server because many provider forbid streaming on 100TB servers.

hetzner.de is quite strict when it comes to DMCA so if you are thinking of hosting movies on their servers then its a bad choice.

I assume u gotta stream full movies aka pirated ones and i doubt if any host will allow it. well services like prq.se accepts any content other than spam and cp, but the thing is they dont provide such high bw and dedi port unlim...

Maybe you should checkout ecatel they do advertise here.Also you are going to attract lots of DMCA notices if you host pirated stuffs and that is a serious issue in any DC.

The Largest files we have are 2.5gb but streams flawlessly most traffic we've had is 5k u/d

Most hosts that offer 100TB are overselling. 100TB = at least 330Mbit which is not cheap no matter how much bandwidth you have.

With such bandwidth requirements you are limited basically to USA and certain parts of Europe. You won't find that kind of bandwidth in Asia or Russia, at least not that has good international performance.

What kind of budget do you have? I think once you've got bandwidth costs to think about, hardware will be a minor consideration.

You can consider Choopa/Constant (http://choopa.com / http://constant.com). They offer high bandwidth plans and have the capacity. They used to host fileserve.net and as I recall their speed was pretty stable. In case you don't know or don't remember, fileserve.net was huge and their bandwidth consumption was enormous.

Hardware wise, depending on what else your machines will be doing, serving files requires little in the way of resources (other than disk I/O and bandwidth) so high specs, I don't believe should need to be particularly high. Raid is definitly worth investing in given you DO NOT want to lose TBs worth of data due to hard drive fault.

You can also consider Constant's object cloud storage which is based on S3. You don't need to worry about managing the RAID and it is expandable to many many TBs. Cost is reasonable too at around $0.06 /GB.

If you think you will have duplicate files uploaded, you can save space by writing a script/program to compare files and where multiple copies exist you can just delete the multiples and create simlinks (or reference) instead. When paying per GB it can save you a ton!

I still recommend Constant/Choopa.

They have inexpensive servers you can start out with. Their capacity will mean you can grow as needed. If you ever need more bandwidth than they can supply, then you've grown bigger than fileserve and won't notice you've stalled your business as you will be too busy counting your money!

Constant often have special deals as well. They once offered a server with 4x2TB HDDs and 5TB traffic for US$79 /month. Not available now, but you never know. Give them an E-Mail and they might give you a special deal. Most data centres have a large stock of 'old' machines that they can't sell very easily. They sell them much cheaper than new servers. I'm sure they will have a few machines with a few TBs of disk space in them sporting old Core2Duos or Core2Quads.

How much traffic do you think you will need to start? If you're just starting out, don't think you will use massive amounts immediately. It can take time to build your user base.
