If your host install CSF + LFD and knows how to configure it. then they should be able to limit the connections being made to the server in total by a IP address
This as well as having IP fail over, meaning have more then one ip, that way if your site or content goes down. You can just change the ip to another. Most ddoss attacks get stopped in a short amount of time because A: They require usaully a compromised host unless the person has money to burn or B: Datacenter usaully notices and null routes the ips.
Actual hardware firewalls will run you a hefty penny and at any rate if a person wants to DDOS there is always a way. DDos is not preventable, but merely contained or blocked.
