TRY THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!

So hey guys!

Im gonna show you how to make your firefox use less memory.

make a new tab, and enter this into your url box:

Code:
about:config
Next, FF might show a error saying that this might void your warranty if you change any settings,
Just click ok.

Now left click in the window, and select new -> integer.

Set this as the name:
Code:
browser.cache.memory.capacity

and when it asks for the integer, set it to 60000.

Now restart FF and it will install some updates and you are good to go!
Tell me if it worked for you!

Thanks for the tip. However this might actually slow your pc down slightly. Because if firefox can't cache something into your RAM it'll use your harddrive, which is much slower.

true but it will not be as slow as FF using about 1GB Ram

You're wrong. If you won't let it use 1GB of ram it will simply use 1GB of HDD space. If you force it to use your HDD FF will be slower. Your trick makes the performance worse. If FF needs that amount of ram let it use it. That's what ram is for...

i would rather then restart firefox but this lets you know if firefox consumes too much Ram and i personally haven't experienced any problems my Ram : 2GB

Hyperz is right. Whats the point of having all that RAM if all you want to do is to leave it empty. Its like ye olde argument of vista vs XP. XP uses little memory, but Vista eats it up. But as its been rightly pointed out, its because its DOING something with it. Why have all that RAM to keep it empty? Make use of it, that's what its there for.

Besides, it will give it up if something else needs it anyway.
