sir i downloaded putty placed ip of the server selected ssh .. i Dos window came asked for user .. i entered my username which i use for cpanel then asked for password and i couldnt type anything .. it wasnt showing me .. i thought it might be for security reasons so i typed my password and pressed enter but it gave me a error saying access denied ... plz help
 
Use the username "root" and the server's root user password. If you don't know it, change it from your provider's VPS panel (the thing from where you reload the OS, for example).
 
You are almost there.

I doubt that your cpanel ID will be your shell access ID, but by default the login ID is root.
Yes you are correct. The password doesn't show up due to security reasons.
Do one thing, copy your password and right click on the putty terminal window (during password entering time). It'll be pasted then.

Try it and tell.

Ohh btw, your cPanel & SSH passwords aren't same if you haven't set them as same.

So, you might have received the root login for your VPS when you bought it.

tried root too ... but same ... bro i cannot type in password field :S

Sir i tried copy pasting the cpanel password but access denied .. i didnt get password for ssh .. can u please guide me how can i generate or get password .. cauz i cant wait for support to reply they take much time...
 
you CAN type in the password field, it just does not show you the characters.

Your VPS provider should have given you the root details upon purchase.

you well not see anything. not even *******. but that's normal (for security reasons)
you need root acces to install rar/unrar
 
if i had lost my ssh password .. how can i regain it ?? can i regain it from cpanel ?? have to check mails i might find it ... cauz i think i lost it :(
 
If it's a linux vps/dedi you have a chance to be automaticaly temporarly banned from the server for security reasons. If you tried to many times to login.
 
sir i found out .. my plan is shared not vps ... cauz someone else ordered for me n he accidently ordered shared ... plz tell me now how to install rar/unrar in shared hosting ??? thankyou

You would need to contact your hosting provider to have them enable SSH on your account. Some shared hosting provider don't allow SSH to be enabled on shared hosting accounts. Most of them will request for you to fill out an agreement form with proof of your photo ID but that mostly depends on the hosting provider.
 
You can't, only your hosting provider has the root server access (and thus the privilege to install or remove packages). Since rar and unrar are CPU intensive scripts I doubt they will though.

@robert - even if his host gives him the ssh access it'll in most cases be limited and he won't be allowed to tamper with system-wide stuff as installing packages.
