The procedure i showed u works fine on mine you can check http://sharew.org for example

and about Mark Forums Read this is how to do that

AdminCP> Quick Phrase Finder > mark_forums_read > Edit > .

. - it would show . instead of Mark Forums Read, and change the . color to the background color of your style this should work, or try making it invisible with the HTML.
