How much ram do i need for a files storage server?

Hello:

I am planning to rent a low end boxes with low memory (512 MB) and large Hard disk space (250 GB).

These Box will just store files and act as a multi servers balance for my videos and mp3 files.

There will be no mysql server or mail server, i will just install gwan server (According to statistics gwan consume low memory and act very fast on static file more than nginx).

My question is:

Does 512 MB ram server can handle my requirement very well?

I am looking for your suggestion.

6gb or 8gb should be fine if you do not allow video streaming. Now if it mostly for streaming videos 12gb

If you are using high-end HDDs with great I/O speeds, then it wont cause much problem if you are using low RAM.

But if the HDDs are SATA II per say, then you need atleast 4gb.

If it is SSD drive, then 512 mb will be fine?

Yes, i think it will be fine,
RAMs major role is to cache files so the I/O wait is minimum.

I would suggest to go with 2gb RAM, to be on the safe side.
