I've added a javascript event to allow GA to track outbound link clicks which works and I can see events in GA reports but now links refuse to open in a new tab/window. The target="_blank" is ignored completely.
Found the answer so I'll post it here in case anyone else is stuck. To fix it you just need to remove the delay that googles help page unhelpfully suggests.
