Found the answer so I'll post it here in case anyone else is stuck. To fix it you just need to remove the delay that googles help page unhelpfully suggests. Found the answer on stack overflow.

I've added a javascript event to allow GA to track outbound link clicks which works and I can see events in GA reports but now links refuse to open in a new tab/window. The target="_blank" is ignored completely. Anyone else had this problem? Thanks in advance.
