It is for good reason. It is very resource intensive having to determine rank and color. Sometimes these functions are already added in certain pages, and so you can easily make use of them. Search, however is resource intensive in itself. Adding more and more resource intensive queries for no reason at all (you didnt search to look at somebody's rank or color, did you?) is a silly thing to do. This is the reason vBulletin didn't add it in the first place.

So, to answer your question, it isn't a fault, it's deliberate.
