I was not using an antivirus software on my laptops for over a year. One day, I decided to check how much spyware and/or minor viruses I have so I installed Avast and Malawarebytes Anty Malaware. I was surprised to see that I had no viruses or dangerous files.
Now I have Avast running and disabled notifications, so it doesn't bother me.
I use Microsoft AV as its fairly light weight and not too annoying.
I used to use and recommend Avira but it became annoying with multiple notifications and then they partnered with ASK.
Before then it was AVG free but once that became popular it seemed to detect less and less and become more unstable. It seemed that for a while every computer that came in with AVG had a viral infection.
I use malware bytes just about everyday on client computers :P
If I were to pay for any active protection it would be Malwarebytes Pro.
I have used avast free and had no problems with it.
I had to remove an instance of Zone Alarm AV today due to it causing a BSOD frequently.
I'm sure everyone has their own preference, Just my 10c worth (1's 2's and 5's long gone here in Aotearoa)
Avast Internet Security. Using it for years. Never really had any issues. Less false-positives. The SafeZone feature is excellent for important banking usage, etc. Also there is a sandbox feature.
lots of my friends and family members come and go sticking their flash drives on my desktop
so i installed kaspersky internet security 2012 on it, it loads heavy but better be safe than sorry..
as for my netbook, doesn't need one, it runs lubuntu.
