Can domain other than .com appear in first page result?

Hi all, Most of the sites get first page result are either .com or .net and rarely any other, unless they are already popular or people specifically searched the domain name.

I understand the problem of maintaining a .com domain with not-so-legal stuff, but what are the chances of .ws or .sx ..etc get first page result, if i'm starting from the bottom? (assuming i abide to google's rule)

Why are you so worried about a .com site? unless you are going to become the next piratebay which I really doubt then dont worry about getting seized. And you can hit the first page of google with any domain, it just take hard work and depends what kind of keyword and competition you are aiming for. I had a site before .ME and it was on the 1st page of google for certain keywords

Last time I checked Wikipedia is neither .com nor .net
Domain extension has perhaps a 2% effect on rankings. The rest is the banklink portfolio, quality of the site and content, EMD and whatever else Google feels like using.
I've seen loads of first page .org .ws .me and even .pw (whatever the fuck that is) on plenty of very competitive keywords.

of course. although .com's are preferential, you can still rank with other TLD's.

You can rank any domain with any TLD's

The ONLY advantage of having a .com is brandability. This basically refers to the fact that if people remember your site and want to go back in, they're more likely to go to the .com first before trying to remember what your extension is.
If you're going to go to ebay, you'll try the .com first before anything else.

From a SERP or SEO point of view, the .com is meaningless.

Examples:
Type in "Forex brokers" on google.com. That's a super competitive keyword:
In the top 10 you'll find one .me and one .net
"warez" - 1 .net and 2 .org
"warez download" 2 .net 1 .asia 1 .org
