I know its not a DDoS mitigation solution ( that will cost you loads of $$$) but cloudflare's threat control center helps in blocking IPs very easily.

If a site in under heavy DDoS and if the attacker is persistent, the only way to stop is to go behind a hardware firewall (or you can just wait it out).
 
Interesting... I went through secure log and found this:

It was there multiple times. When I checked IP, it belongs to rapidvps.com. Anyone know who they are?
