It most probably won't have a reverse effect as you said because the number of people buying online won't outnumber the number of people buying goods in physical shops, at least in the near future of India.
And if Amazon does come to India, I don't see how a company might effect the sales of the shops such that they'll close down. So, Amazon coming to India is only advantageous.

Amazon will kill a lot of local shops, coz amazon have lower prices.

True, as Rox said, they already have the offices, warehouses, the human resource, and the backend to get this started, they are on their haunches waiting for regulatory approval, which may not exactly be easy to achieve if the government's reaffirmed stance on FDI in ecommerce is any indication. :/

About the job issue, I think jobs are more likely to be affected by FDI in retail (ie, physical retail) rather than ecommerce since as much as ecommerce might be growing in India it is still a small percentage of physical retail. Even if a few jobs are compromised in the beginning, I still favour FDI in retail and ecommerce alike because it's better for the industry, they can use a little competition, and competition means the quality of products would increase which is only better for the consumer. Plus, India is big enough for both local and outside businesses to co-exist peacefully.

I got this mail today:

Hi ,

This is Asha from Amazon, I have tried reaching you on phone but couldn’t reach you . We are looking to start our operations in India and are evaluating partners for our future business. We are approaching you as you are already working with us in other locales.

We can discuss more about it, If you can forward your phone number and preferred time to call you.

Thanks & Regards,

Again second time now. The email you received is spam - not sent from an Amazon employee, but spam to steal your credit card and personal information from you. You will be asked to provide your payment information at the end of the segment in order to get started as one of the "select few" to participate in Amazon's move to India. :cough:

Again, this email is not valid, this is a spam.

Am I in newb land? Slow 2k13 puppies :139:

I doubt what you just said. The reply to ID is proper, @amazon.com, so the mail goes only to amazon itself.
All the asked is for phone number at the moment, which doesn't seem so suspicious given they want to discuss regarding potential partners as they want someone who has already been a merchant on their main website(which I am).
I also looked up that person on google and she exists:

You gotta be kidding me right? Your killing me over here man, please stop it, please . First off, Amazon would never email you such a thing. Secondly, there is a misspell in the form of capitlization in that message you received. Thirdly, there not going to keep the move to India hush hush - when it happens it will make all major news outlets across the world. Fourth, they wouldn't be asking you for your phone number if they already tried to call you. Fifth, Amazon doesn't need you or any other "select few" people to exist. Sixth, the email address doesn't mean anything. I can send you an email right now from FlipKart if you would like letting you know that you will receive a years worth of free listings for a one time payment of $50.00. Then I will have a website aka <>< page that looks just like FlipKart.com.

Agreed with To0. This is not how Amazon does it's business. 100% guaranteed spam.

Are you really so naïve? You really think a multi-million(billion?) dollar corporation needs your help? Secondly, the email is so badly written than anyone with a brain would know its bs.

This is what happens when a country booms. They are going to be targeted more and more in the coming years and with good reason. Things like this can easily slip by.

When the internet first truly excelled here in the USA - it was fun times, appears now that the playing field has shifted onto new naive victims who don't understand what a simple spoof email is :|

Alright man this is just getting to be too much for me.

I will try to explain it to you one more time and then I'm done.

Why would an Amazon employee try to SPAM me?

It's not an Amazon employee, it's not Amazon Incorporated, it's not a valid/legal message, it is a criminal organization pretending to work for Amazon so that they can SCAM you.

Do you understand now?

Header information shows it to be true, but it's not. Header information can also be spoofed.

The email envelope addy is legit because that's the proper way things are done in order to deliver. Address in the headers can be spoofed because its not used in the mail delivery process. You can view addresses in the to and from and headers, but you cant see the true envelope addresses & they don't need to match.

This is 100% a scam.

I have tried reaching you on phone but couldn’t reach you .
, If you can forward your phone number

Wow, so I am registered and amazon as merchant, the header seems correct and that employee even exists, but there's no budging is there?
And about the phone, my old number has been discontinued which explains the issues to contact me

Well this is just epic here. I have to apologize to you Yash. Even though this has the makings of typical scam, it's actually not :|. Furthermore if it would have been you would have been duped just as easily, so it is good that this thread took the angle that it did so in the future you can be more prepared :).

Anyways the proof that this was a legitimate email sent from Amazon (still can't believe Amazon is hiring disabled people).

Hello,

Yes I have been sending this Email to our Partners in India for the same reason mentioned. To those who replied to this mail, I spoke to them on phone too.
I work for Amazon.com for the Junglee.com Process.
Let me know if any other information required from my side.

Thanks & Regards,

Apologies Yash. It's funny to see Amazon, a company which pride's itself on high standards, employing people who don't have a basic understanding of the english language. Especially when trying to gain commercial leads where they need to be professional.
