I got this mail today:
Hi ,

This is Asha from Amazon, I have tried reaching you on phone but couldn’t reach you . We are looking to start our operations in India and are evaluating partners for our future business. We are approaching you as you are already working with us in other locales.

We can discuss more about it, If you can forward your phone number and preferred time to call you.

Thanks & Regards,

Amazon launched junglee.com some time ago though junglee just indexes products available at other e-stores.
I think its pretty good that Amazon is coming to India, finally ebay will have its competition and e-commerce will grow in India.
What'd you think?

You can't use anything of amazon.com on junglee at the moment (except the user details) since junglee like I said, only indexes productis from other sites like infibeam, flipkart, etc. When you wish to buy it redirects you to the actual sites.
So until Amazon launches its full-fledged operations here in India, there's not much you can do.

If Amazon expands to India this will one of very good things that can happen to boost Indian E-commerce industry.

And hopefully with coming of Amazon to Indian more Indian people will be motivated to avail the new emerging E-commerce services.

Yep. I used to sell on eBay a few years ago and eBay acts quite monopolistic by charging high fees and always taking customer's side instead of the seller to remain popular. But now it will change thankfully :)

Lets hope so :) .Also do you have any other info like any timeline ?

As your first post mentioned that they are willing to discuss about business opportunity with you.It will be great if you can share more interesting info in this matter (if allowed to do so by amazon) with community.

That's pretty good news. :D I guess they are betting on the Indian government updating its FDI policy on e-commerce sooner rather than later. I guess it will be a while until we really see this getting close to a launch and this is probably just them preparing for when they get government approval.

Well I don't expect them to roll out in the next few months. Setting up offices, recruiting, marketing, planning will take time. And we all know how good Indian Govt. is with red tape, so you can perhaps add a couple more months to it.
But yeah I do think it will be great for Indian merchants, currently sites like flipkart and jabong have captured the entire market and I have noticed how deeply have merchants on ebay been affected.
Amazon will just make it tougher for both ebay and other sites like flipkart/jabong. The only winner here will be the us, the consumers :D

That's good news :)
It'll certainly create more jobs in India, IF they plan to go large scale.

It can have a reverse effect too, jobs can be lost as more and more shops close down unable to compete with online merchants resulting in job losses. But then let's keep out fingers crossed for the best as India is already threatened by the likes of Walmart.

It most probably won't have a reverse effect as you said because the number of people buying online won't outnumber the number of people buying goods in physical shops, at least in the near future of India.
And if Amazon does come to India, I don't see how a company might effect the sales of the shops such that they'll close down. So, Amazon coming to India is only advantageous.

I have actually seen several shops close down!
When these supermarkets and onlince e-commerce shops come up they offer products cheaper(lets not get deep into how). I've noticed myself, my friends, cousins, relatives change their buying methods.
Today I can buy shoes, clothing, mobile phones, all online at better deal. Earlier there used to be small stores down the street which used to sell several brands(of shoes) under 1 roof but now people buy them online or in large stores like Planet sports, Reliance footprint, etc.

Consider it this way:
Each shop needs:
1 cashier
1 accountant
1 watchman/doorman
1-2 cleaner
1 manager

Now if you tear down 3 shops to build 1 large shop, there's clear job loss of 5-6 people. This is just an estimate(as I have not even mentioned other jobs).

The shops which will remain unaffected are grocery stores and other shops selling non-durable goods.

It depends on how you define small shops.

Consider a small shop. By small I mean the normal mobile shop down the street which sells all kind of mobiles and also duplicate goods.
Here, I guess a maximum of two or three people might be involved in the business where no one is the owner or the head. There are no cashiers or accountants or cleaners simply because such a small shop cannot afford them. Now assume there are there similar shops in a row. Now, to make a bigger shop I'll have to bring down these three small shops having totally 9 people (assumed) involved. After bringing down these smaller shops, I make a bigger shop. Now I'll have to hire a few people to look after the business (Assuming I'm the owner). The accountants, cashier etc now come into the picture. It is now that I'll have to sophisticate the shop.
I hope you get the point.

Also, I think grocery stores will actually be affected the most. You yourself said that supermarkets are on the rise which sell goods at a cheaper rate. So why would anyone go to a grocery shop to buy things at the MRP rate?

Jobs might get transformed not destroyed :P

yup ppl will loose their biz and turn to sales boys n sales girls & most profit been sent to FDI's :dan:

you do understand small biz money stays in the country ? here profits will be siphoned off elsewhere :hrhr:

i am sure you have zero biz background & applying a logic from an employee (slave) perspective

You sir need some knowledge on business yourself. You really mean to say government doesn't earn via big companies?

Reliance, Tata, Infosys, Wipro, HCL, Maruti, Bajaj, Hero Honda etc etc etc etc etc (the list is huge) are all big ass companies and the money definitely stays in India. If you only meant big foreign companies then again you are wrong since the government has enough policies to keep most of the money in India, if not all.

Also, when jobs transform they are usually for a better life. Salesman in a big company/retail outlet is definitely better than the same position in a small shop. Better salary, better perks, job security, respect in society, wow factor of a big company etc etc etc.

Progress is life, keep up with the time or be fucked back.
