Forums are dying because of Social Networks

yes many forums are dying even same is happening with large porn forums you can see that there traffic is reduced sufficiently
may be due to filehost breakdown

I don't think that has affected discussion boards much !

This is meant to be a discussion and I want to hear what you think.
I think you answered your own question. Forums and social networks are different now. Originally, forums were for communication, just like social networks. However, now they've developed more into a discussion - which social networks can't offer.

Forums will continue to stay alive - but only for discussions on a niche - such as PS3 games, Webmasters etc (you wouldn't find people talking about webmaster stuff on Facebook now would you?).

More proof of this are blogs, they are managing just fine, even though twitter can be used to find out news people still use BBC news blog, mashable, torrentfreak etc.

Edit: +1 Spartan, it could be dying simply because of Megaupload - Wjunction is dying because their are a lack of paying file hosts at the moment.

Reasons why forums are dying spammers trolls and admins either to not do jack shit to stop this or is gets way outta hand to fast and they can not handle all of it. Another thing is average life of a decent size forum is like 3 to 4 yrs. One other thing can happen either the forum gets sold or admin changes the rules and make them to restrict members to do not like a ton of rule to follow

Can people think more generally. I'm not worried or concerned about WJunction, filehosts or warez and on about forums or Bulletin Boards in general.

I agree

Maybe not on Facebook but their is a lot of talk from webmasters on Google+. You can follow pages like Google Webmaster Page, people like Matt Curtis (head of Webspam on Google Search), Google employees who work on websites such as Pierre Far, Susan Moskwa, John Mueller and outside Google follow Search Engine Land, numerous developers, coders, SEO Specialists, Marketing and Monetizing Specialists etc. Have all these in one circle and you'll have a excellent stream on managing and controlling your website.

Blogs are different. You generally don't interact with them as much. Only certain people can create a post on the BBC, Mashable, Torrentfreak etc while anyone can make a post on a forum. Another point is the replies on Techcrunch which is another popular blog similar to Mashable which you mentioned have a comment system powered by Facebook showing how it's an improved system than regular blog comments.

So your saying trolls only exist on forums but nobody ever trolls on Facebook, Twitter or other Social Networks?

It's a great topic, but really forums and community boards are really one-of-a-kind & currently unreplaceable by any social network. Alot of forums that I own usually have "constant threads" like this topic, where people post/reply over and over to the same thread.

When it comes to like facebook or twitter, soon as your status change's so does the quickness to interact on older topics. The [#]box with new post is nifty but forum's are a powerhouse in there own. With Social Networks you have to dig deep to find information that your looking for, with a forum you can search a couple page's and have a whole industries outlook/issues/discussions in a matter of seconds.

Forums are the real Search Engines :) Social Networks are just the new mailbox.

Not for me, I've been using forums since 2004 for my keen interests, and I don't think that will ever change. Forums provide information faster, and the discussion is usually in way more depth when compared to social networking sites. I'm extremely active on 3 forums; KanyeToThe, 4chan and one-that-shall-not-be-spoken-of.

I came here to kick knowledge with you guys and learn new things along the way. It just so happened that I became good friends with a few of you which ended up bringing the depth of discussion down a notch.

Let's face it: Social Networks totally SUCK. There is no control whatsoever or room for creating the environment of the community. Also nobody really wants to discuss on a social network like facebook which is practically owned by the CIA. Also: Your Group/Page can be erased or 'taken over' by facebook any time for any reason. Especially facebook has demonstrated very often in the past, that you can never rely on assets you have with them. And they excuse everything they do by saying that they are a free service. facebook, above all, is a highly unprofessional service, where the parameters of cooperation and even the design changes all the time, mostly for the worst. I would never ever entrust my business with amateurs, cause that is what they are, at best.

I don't think your comment about your group/page "erased or taken over by facebook any time for any reason" is fair. I think a lot of people have this problem far more on forums where they are banned, have topics or replies removed often without reason. Generally if you have something removed on Facebook it's against the rules or terms and conditions as their rules are far more defined while if it happens on a forum it could be because an admin/moderator was in a bad mood or just didn't like you.
