A small Calculation

WE plan to start a small file hosting site

we have custom script


total user = 500

We allow 500GB/user

so

we need 250TB Hard disk

if we have 500 uploader we get 10000-15000 User per day

if we get 15000 user per day

50-60 user download same time
so

if speed 1Gbps
average download speed 1.8 - 2 MBps that's ok

15000 user per day

average add clicks 150- 160
we can get 7 - 10 $ per day
month 210-250 $

Server cost

we need monthly BW = 75TB

No Server with 250TB HD

175$ For 1 Server with 4TB HD so
we need 63 Server
total server cost 11025$ But erning 250$ lost 10775$

HOW TO RUN FILE HOSTING SITEs ?

If you dont have high budget then dont start it.

In the beginning there is almost 0 profit and very huge investment.

(I am saying this from my experience of last 45 days in CloudCache)
 
Please do not open a file host if you believe that is the amount of hard drive space you can get per server and port speed.
 
You need to have at least 6 month's expense in your hands to keep it running and secondly servers of filehosts don't cost so much

Why oh why oh why do u want to buy a server with 250TB Hard disk why ??

In the start u wont get that much uploads mate just start with a server of 4 tb and then upgrade it per usage

Wat ? Servers of filehosts dont cost so much ?

We are having 24 GB RAM in each server then also load is always high and you are telling it doesnt cost much ?

Bro, dont suggest if you dont know yourself...

Probably you did not buy from the right place. And thing is, remote marketing is not the way a filehost should run, take rapidshare and mediafire for an example.

They cost far less than what he calculated, and I can bet on that, as I know it very well.

I dont want to go in an argument, hence ignore it. Stay on topic.
 
You can contact the datacenter directly and explain them that you will be ordering around 50-60 servers. So they'll give you a huge discount for sure.

Also, if there are 500 users and they are willing to pay 12$/mo then, 500*12 = $6000/mo + 200$ from ads.
Total Earnings: $6200. (if you consider the payment processing fees then cut this to $6000/mo :()

For those 500 users, you'll need 250TB HDD (check if you really need that).

1 server with 2 TB HDD, then you'll be needing almost 64 servers.

Cost of 1 server would normally be around 100$ (yes, you can get this price, just contact any *big* US datacenter). So 64 x 100 = 6400$

So that's almost like +400$ you'll need to put from your pocket. You can reduce this extra cost by reducing the server expenses (either by getting more discount, or buying your own hardware and colocating servers at a price low as 50$/mo per server with datacenter OR just reduce the number of servers to 50 at the start).

Also this calulation is done without affiliate system, imagine if you gotta pay uploaders too! I wonder how do paying hosts break even!!

Can you make it more specific? What do you mean by remote marketing!
 
@foxman - he means rewards program, he wants to say to OP that OP should open a filehost like RS or MF without affiliate program...

you can start by only 1 or 2 servers the server has 8TB HD so that will become great then when ur filehost start to hit the limit "say u have 8TB then when it becomes near 6 TB " then you should buy another one & so one .
that's how you can build a filehost site not to begin with 250 TB .

By remote marketing, I mean, don't just hide behind that monitor in your home trying to run a "FILEHOST". People like to see who they are working with

No I did not mean that. What I mean't is, don't be like calling yourself gay names like Hish and all that. Stand out in public and be original and then only you can be good at it. Hiding and working will bring you no good.

That makes perfect sense, what would you recommend OP to do?
 
You are tripping balls if you believe you're going to operate a file host with $175/month servers.

Dedicated 1Gbit lines will cost you at least $500 - $1,000 without a server.

If you want to operate an affiliate based file host, get your costs right first. 15,000 users visit you and only $10 generated?!

I suggest you do your research before blowing a potential $15,000. (Researching isn't asking a bunch of people on WJunction who have never operated a file host in their file and are basing their cost opinions on purely hearsay)

Please don't open a file host.
