Do anybody know how to stop this program on a vBulletin forum?

For thsoe who dont know what Xrumer is.

It is a Windows blackhat SEO program that is able to successfully register and forum spam with the aim of boosting search engine rankings. The program is able to bypass security techniques commonly used by many forums and blogs to deter automated spam, such as account registration, client detection, many forms of CAPTCHAs, and e-mail activation before posting. The program utilities socks and http proxies in an attempt to make it more difficult for administrators to block posts by source IP and features a proxy checking tool to verify the integrity and anonymity of the proxies used.

Add some random QA for registration, or make it like on WJunction, special group for new registered users. So they aren't able to post anything first 24 hours.

just add a question on register and that will stop the bots. if ur using ipb add a profile file and require it something like antispam write 'imafia' in the box

I'm not sure which modification WJunction is using, as el_jentel1 is always saying that they like to code their own modifications. I've searched on vB.org and couldn't find anything regarding this.

I'm not sure, but I think that this could work, vBulletin cron job. It should move all users from specific usergroup into the new one after 24-48 hours.
I don't know how to do it, but it's the only thing I can think of at the moment...

Probationary usergroup would be same like all others, only different thing is that user wouldn't have permissions to post/reply in topics, or to use private messages system.

Just use advanced questions mate.. It will also help you get rid of stupid members! :P

Example: "When i say Bonnie, what masculine name comes first in your mind?"

lol it's not custom coded. it's called user promotions, test it out

Also, question and answer is a good way of stopping bots, but there's one problem. Now I'm going to assume xrumer is like senuke because I never used xrumer but they all do the same thing.
Basically, if the bot has a hard time registering it will pop the page open for the user so they can quickly fill out any missing parts.

A really extreme option is adding an .htaccess to the registration form with something simple like "What is 2 + 2" and they just have to put 4 in the user field.

Actually, that's great option, .htaccess username & password for individual file can help out with this, as XRumer wouldn't be able to complete the request at all for the register.php page. Of course, this should be only done if you own a big forum. Real potential members wouldn't have nothing against typing "4" to access the registration page. So it would just prevent the automated requests.

how about you create a group, make all new members go into that group and make it so that you need to verifty each post before it goes live,

once they hit x amount of posts mvoe them to a normal members group;

Could you post vB.org link of that modification? I'm sure other users would like to know more about it too.

It's not a mod on vBulletin. It's a built in feature.
ACP>Usergroups>Promotions

From their you select custom usergroup like prohibition here, and set it to 2 days and x amount of posts and it will automatically switch it to a regular user with all features. You will have to get a mod called Usergroup upon registration which will put them in the prohibition usergroup
