Your i7 config is more power full then your E3 because of its have more ram and better hdd then xeon server . But hdd is bottle neck for i7 configuration server . Better grab sas hdd under raid 5/10 .

Both of them are very good spec.
But i would say the i7 is more powerful more ram more cores higher clock speed.

It also depends what software you are running i have a 4 core i7 vps running nginx. The site its self is fairly heavy lots of ajax with big mysql queries and regular refreshes and here is my htop output for reference:

So i would go with the i7 though as said above get an ssd with it if you can.

If you are concerned with getting a ddos attack you could use cloudflare (if you do go for the premium), Let them handle it and you can focus on your site instead of worrying about kids.

They do but you have a lower priority and if the attack gets too big they will turn it off and let the attack through to your server (seen it happen a few times its to avoid affecting other free users). If you want to start a big social networking site uptime should be your main priority so i think the price is justified :)

Yes , we not yet faced DDOS Problem (now using the xeon server from hostgator it was slow now that is why going to i7) si DDOS Protection is important for social network site ?

I think ddos protection is important for any site but it depends on your skills as well.
On one of my sites in the 2 years it has been running we have had 3 ddos attacks, I have another sysop working with me and we were able to mitigate them all but if it got to the point where we couldn't stop it i would use cloudflare.

If you don't want to pay for it go for the free plan and if you do ever get a big ddos attack you can just upgrade to the premium for a month let them deal with it then go back to the free plan.
