Whether you need Cpanel depends on your requirements tbh. If you are comfortable is managing your own server and with linux in general, then i see no point in using Cpanel as a control panel. You can use a free panel like lxadmin,ISPConfig3, Virtualmin etc and do all the basic tasks quite efficiently.

yes. i would say you really don't need cpanel.
try ipsconifg etc.
howtos fpr ipsconfig: http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-ubuntu-12.10-apache2-bind-dovecot-ispconfig-3 & http://www.howtoforge.com/perfect-server-centos-6.3-x86_64-apache2-courier-ispconfig-3 & etc. there are tutorials for nearly every OS
the same goes for the other panels.

if you don't want to do much changing after the install openpanel is a small alterntive -> http://www.openpanel.com/download/openpanel-download/
but it will only run on debian
it's probalby the easiest way to install a new vps, but the gui is s.th. you need to get used to. (approx 30mins are enough. But it's not as nice as e.g. ipsconig or cpanel)

I'm really good at picking up things and i don't want to waste $8/mo on getting cpanel... i'll try get the vps and will try ISPConfig3 on it. but what i am really confused what to after that ? like on my current dead vps, i used XAMPP and controlled my site through myPHP admin database.. so any help after installation of isconfig will be really helpful !

I think zpanel will be your best bet .., the features and style of zpanel is much alike to that of cpanel, so will suite you best.
