Why is it hard to attract genuine editors for a download-blog these days ?

Hey all,

Long story shortened, I run a blog dedicated for audio downloads & audio related apps etc.. etc.. I won't mention the site as it's not needed in this thread.;)

I used to run this site as a hobby for about 2yrs , whilst i had a REAL life job as an computer engineer. So money wasn't a problem nor it wasn't a priority. I just loved discovering new music each day. B-)

As the site got popular, there was more demand from the visitors, so i was having less time to comit to the site (because of my day job too). :(

So i attracted some new editors (uploaders) by posting a notice message on the site's homepage (something that scene blogs do too when they need new editors). This goes well however.

But why is it that we always seem to easily accepted new people in to your site who sound very promising to their commited, but few weeks later they become less commited and basically lazy?

Also some editors only want to be part of the site just to get a "status" or to make money from the filehosts they upload music too. What happend to loyalty ?

Some of them only help around IF i pay them a wage. (But no i dont, my job pays the hosting & bandwidth)X-(

Don't get me wrong, I've met over 100 editors that contributed on my site but i've had to sack them all every week, and I simply don't have time to teach new editors how to post properly and expect them to become uncommited after a few weeks. ]
(PS. some of them don't even have MSN/IRC/GoogleChat, due to their timezones this becomes hard to communicate)

So how do you guys deal with people like that ? & the fact running sites is never a "ONE-MAN" kind of thing ?

Edit: I just realized i've typed up a very long topic lol.

Current year: 2012!

Nobody uploads for passion or for sharing care.. All upload for money..

It's sad how everybody destroyed entire warez.. I'm not saying don't use affiliate file host, you can use, but at least upload on any free server.. like RS or MF..

There are no more "genuine editors".. It's been 2+ years and I'm still single person managing all my blogs..

Cheers!

well. all i can say is if your doing it as a hobby and your not in it for the money.. stick with it.. with all these paid filehosts closing down or changing their rules there will be less and less uploaders.. and the real people like you will be discovered and you will start to gain a lot more traffic.

Are you kidding me ? You managing all blogs ? :O How's that even possible ? Especially when visitors DEMAND daily updates.

^^I know and I'm not kidding mate :) It takes lot of time to update.. Some stuff I update few hours later..

At the end, it makes me and my viewers happy as I always provide free links.

Warez is meant for sharing and also making some money.

Such sites only work when it's a one man team or when you have a really good friend who shares the same music taste as you. If you get people who simply re-upload and don't listen to the music, not only that there will be mistakes like a wrong cover, typos in the tracklist, country of origin, year and maybe even the archive itself could be broken.

Best music download sites are usually sites from the bloggers that are hosted on blogspot and wordpress, because they either rip the cd's themselves or get it from some friend.

Don't worry about the site not being updated daily, visitors will be happy if you update it weekly. Good music can wait.

You're definitley right, that's exactly the problems i was facing. Not to mention that sometimes they get it perfect and sometimes they mess everything up.

The worst part is, every editor accusses me of encouraging dictactorship on them or just being a perfectionist. I mean come on ? Who would visit a site that has editorial errors ?

I can be happy to update the site every week, but i shall be expect comments, emails, facebook comments of visitors telling me to hurry up with the updates lol. Even if i delayed a few days, some visitors will hit google & find another site.

Okay, back to the subject. I agree that one-man sites do work because you're in full control (...IF you have the time every day that is)

Well there are many ppl who want latest music and many sites update everyday. And if Orca doesn't have it they will google for it. See this brand new Site and chose to stay on it.

Well said, and especially if there is a lot of them out there, you can't help but feeling competitive about it too.

Hmm, I was going to start a new music site simply because there was a 7-9 month period I was staying on point with it :S , then priorities got in the way though. Not warez but a new music blog sort of, not necessarily mainstream stuff and majority from artists that might not be widely recognized.

In regards to your query, people are selfish and will portray whatever to get what they want :), if you've sacked 100 editors then you're probably already doing a decent job at weeding them out.

Well, thanks , i did do a good job of sacking those 100 people, but it kind of discourages me from even hiring a new one next time.

For example, most estabilished music sites like vevo for example have editors who do it for money coz the company can pay for it. But it's not like that for underground sites/blogs, especially ones in the 'music' scene.

If i didn't have too much going regards to personal life, then i would do it all myself no problem, but sometimes life gets in the way, then that's where we seek geniune help not just for a "status" or money.

Maybe you should think about it posting your Music on a Site rather than creating your own. If you don't care about Money it shouldn't bother you.

Then again, we ALL want to own a site to ourselves, so lol. That could only happen as a "last resort" kind of thing.
