Turn Off Autorun(AutoPlay) in Windows XP

  • First Click on “Start” and then click “Run”
  • Type “gpedit.msc”
  • In “Group Policy” select “Computer Configuration” -> “Administrative Templates” -> “System”

  • In the right pane of “System”, and then double click ”Turn off Autoplay”
  • In Setting tab, select “Enabled” for “Turn off Autoplay”
  • Click “OK” to confirm

most ppl here arent pc noobs but still for those who are...this is a nice share. its quite useful for avoiding viruses from pen drives and removable media

Why not just press and hold shift when you insert the CD/DVD? That stops it from autorunning but doesn't disable it (sometimes you might want a CD to still autorun).
