Actually Google re-wrote their code and now advise you to put it in the header. Originally they wanted you to put it in the footer to prevent slow loading of your page but that meant it wasn't as accurate or record people that that close the page before it was fully loaded.

Now their code loads with the rest of the page and doesn't affect the loading of the page so by putting it in the header you get more accurate traffic records.
