The 13th January AJ Blacklisted wrote that the torrent files will disappear from the Pirate Bay. A month later, the date of transition is clear.
And now the day is here - 29 February 2012. This means that from now on you have to use so-called magnet-links.
This means that it is no longer just the contents of the files that are shared with others, but also information about the files.
In practical terms it does not matter. Most torrent clients (uTorrent (Mac), Transmission (Windows), etc.) support the magnets.
You just have to remember this to your browser so that your application starts automatically when you click on a magnetic link.
As regards the possibility of being caught for illegal file sharing, so they do not decrease with the transition.
It is still possible to monitor the IP addresses that share a file. And if the law changed so that police or the record industry / movie industry can demand to know who's behind the IP addresses, you can end up in trouble.
The Pirate Bay's own explanation for why they pass from the torrents of magnetic states:

This means that whoever has the rights to the material (film companies, record labels, etc.) has approved that the film / song / game / book / program can be spread freely, without compensation.
