How much space do you think I'll need? Would the following specs be enough? I am not planning to go big like youtube but I want to get at least several hundred thousands though.

Intel Xeon 5520 (8 Cores/16 threaded)
12GB DDR3
10TB SATAII
1Gbps unmetered dedicated (324TB b/w) - DC in US

Of course the above specs are not for my first days but I'm thinking if the above specs can hold 500k ish members. I don't know how fast the space will fill. It'll be a legal site, no warez.

Let me know what you think I should know about running a video streaming site.

legit video streaming site? what would make your site different than the plethora of established ones?

if it was gonna be a warez streaming site I could get you traffic and users but otherwise you're trying to do something that many others are doing very well already

I have my own idea and I haven't see anyone doing it and everywhere I go, I see people trying to do it in front of me on sites which don't offer "this" feature. So I thought it could be successful attempt but I don't know. On the other hand, you're right that many people have better streaming sites but I hope there'll be at least some who like my site's unique feature. :\

By the way, is embedding youtube videos on my streaming site illegal?

Okay well I think those specs should be good I guess seeing as they'll be short videos. You won't have nearly enough content on there to warrant that kind of server though

Don't even, for a moment, count on that server to hold 500k ish members (of course, if it's just inactive members filling up your database tables, then that's ok).

Make a legal site where people can post videos from all the different video sites.
Movies / Tv Shows and other videos.

If you make a place where they can only post youtube videos then you will fail.

In legal if you share videos that are uploaded in different video sharing places then it will be OK

It'll be a site which only allows users to embed the youtube videos, not store the files on the server.
ROFL!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS?
xD
U want this spec to embed videos?
Rofl

Check out my unique video streaming script..:
http://www.sbanime.com

I use it only for anime embedding from megavideo and I GET 100 VIEWS DAY

I USE A SHARED HOSTING $4 MONTH :|

WHY GO BIG ?:o

Don't start such a website mate, as stated, sooo much people are trying this already, you can have alot of special features on your website, but people don't care about that. If i visit a streaming website, i want a huge selection i can choose from, not some l33t features

Yeap. Take litewarez for example (sorry lite), they have the greatest features but since there is no traffic, there is no real success. =/

Anyway, the hosting you require depends on if you'll be using 3rd party sites to stream the media or if you'll be streaming media from your own server(s).

3rd part to stream the media.
100tb will not host you if you have anything illegal.
I won't. I will only host the script that allows the users to embed videos from other video steaming sites.

I can't explain it clearly. What if I allow users to make money off the videos they embed to my site? Would they still come?

Then a VPS would be fine unless if you get MAD traffic. Since they're not uploading anything to your servers, you don't need anything high-end. :)

One unique feature isn't enough to make it succeed. :P

Anyway good luck mate, keep us informed about the project.

Real video streaming sites cost a fortune to run. Take YouTube as an example. Believe it or not but in it's 10 year history it has never made a profit. Last year it make about 200 million in revue from adverts but it's expenses were about 400 million as bandwith, staff, advertising etc cost a fortune. The reason it's a success for Google is it tracks all the users and learns what they like and search. That way Google's Search Engine can find better results and learn what people like therefore it's Adsense can make more money.

As an individual company YouTube is a disaster financially.

Unless you have the money to pump endlessly into a company where you get no return then you have no choice but just embed videos from other sites.
To be honest their's nothing special or unique about this.

** Note: Google never releases it's income data and the figures are estimates from a reliable financial blog post I read a number of months ago. Can't remember the exact figures but it was in that range. **

1. Congrats. You just wasted money on a server because they deleted you for embeding illegal series. This is a respected US company. Not some stupid-ass pre-teen renting a server he wont even pay for and be out of 'business' in a month.

2. WTF is that going to do? Now you're paying out even more? How much will you make a day? I worked out $3/day on my TV series site. I've done about $3.21/day.

Once you get any talent at all you can figure how much you will make on any given day. This will help to track how much you should spend on advertising and server upgrades.

@ JJJ: If everything goes well and each user gets around 500-1000 daily views, I could be making around $20-40 /day but if I have lots of stable users which I plan to, I'm looking at earning around $400-$500 per day xD but that's just stupid and dreammy guesses for now. I've been thinking this over and over again. Even though I don't wanna say it'll be 100% working plan, I see a little hope.
