smf or phpbb?

In free scripts smf and phpbb both are good but in paid i prefer vBulletin.

I personally think SMF looks nicer, but bb has more users and resources.

SMF is a much better forum software, it was my first forum, support at official SMF site is VERY helpful, guys there would give me their skype numbers, help me out 1 on 1, etc at no cost. So much faster, cleaner, and EASIER to use.. BUT!!!

Here's the catch, PHPBB is much more common so you will find much more custom content like themes, mods etc. That is what is lacking with SMF, but hopefully with time it will change.

SMF if you only need standard forum with few mods, PHPBB for alot of customization, and VBB if you got money, best customization because you have to pay.
