For the experts out there. Do you guys have an idea on the kind of server that is needed to run file hosting site? I am not talking about server that host the main site, I am talking about the server that host the uploaded files.

What kind of spec is needed? I look around leaseweb and found their 100tb lines that has 24TB of sata drives. It looks good but then I also read somewhere else that raid 10 drives are necessary, so I got confused after.

So can any expert here tells me the kind of spec that is needed?

Raid10 is the best option when you need Speed and Mirroring capabilities to avoid data loss in case of hardware failure.

The next thing required is high speed connectivity, either go for shared 10gbps or dedicated 1gbps line if you want to offer the best speeds.

Since hostplate seems to have problems, are the rest of the providers reliable? I found some really nice offers from the links djboutit provided.

Also, from what you guys stated, it seems like the most important thing is RAM and the network speed (1gbps dedicated is a must). Is processor not that important? How about the HDD speed?

I am learning so much from all your posts guys! :)

Things are not dependent much on CPU as in case of file sharing it's read-write speed that matters.

A single mid-level Xeon will be fine.
If your Read/ Write is slow, even having a hexa core processor won't help, due to slow I/O.. CPU Wait will increase and Processor Load will surge.

If you are looking for File Sharing Servers, i would recommend Intergenia AG or FDC. They are cheap with nice bandwidth and hardware.

I can't seem to find intergenia ag website that list their dedicated server.

As for fdc, which server of theirs would you reccommend?
