I am about to open a business

I want my business to show up on the first page of google but iam up against many websites that have been there for years. One of the websites that is the 3rd result has had their website since 2001! :( i know it's very hard to overtake them but i want to overtake

I have not bought the domain either. I found the ones listed on the first page have my city on their domain name.

Example is. "Newyorkaccountants.com" i notice the domain ranks higher than one that just says "michaelyoo.com" << business name but does not have city or accountant on the domain.

Should i get a domain with the city and type of business iam in. example accountant?

or is using the business name like michaelyoo ok?

thanks

You should get a domain with the city your in and the type of business you are in.. This way when someone goes to type in your url or sees your company name they will know where you are located and what type of business you do..

This will also be good for search engines when someone types in for example NYC Accountant and say your domain name is NYCAccountant.(com) or what ever then you'll have a good chance that your site will show up on the top numbers of the search query.

It doesn't matter. You need to have domain which is short, easy to remember and related to this what you are doing. So you can have domain with yours first and second name but remember to write in meta title what and where you do it. Your rank depend from links which targed to website and content. Try to make blog about your work and see the results. Maybe it will help when competition is low.

For the last year, Google completely joined the going-local trend. Most of the surfers are using their local version of Google website, so I guess you should adopt the trend.

For SEO purposes you should use keywords in your domain name. If you want to build a brand, than use just your company name.

But I recommend you to register both and create a business website on the brand domain and an SEO blog on your keywords domain. Also don't host both websites on the same host ;)
