Removing pages from google

Hello,

i administrate a link directory script. My problem is that when i remove a category google still lists it in the search results. I think this is because the link directory scripts doesn't send a 404 error code but redirects to a custom 404 page in html. Like here: http://weblinkz.ws/removed-category

Does this have something to do with mod_rewrite?

But some dead categories are listed since over 1 month now.

I just logged in to google webmaster tools. Really interessting, thank you for this hint.

Now i have an other problem. I want to add a xml sitemap (http://www.weblinkz.ws/sitemap.xml) but google says that the doctype is missing. Can someone explain me how i can create a doctype for the xml sitemap?
