I am thinking about starting a site where you can go to watch TV shows online. I was also thinking about uploading a lot of the episodes (mainly to Megaupload).

How safe is this? Are there any steps I should take to protect myself or am I more or less in the clear because I am small?

Ya as Sandin0 said. The trick it to just link to the movies/TV shows which are stored on Megaupload. Your just linking to the files and not hosting them yourself which is the dangerous illegal part. That being said it's better if your hosted on a server outside the USA even for linking. Someplace like the Netherlands is good for small to medium size sites.

You'll never be 100% safe but their are things you can do to help your security. Generally it's the larger sites that are targeted and you won't have to worry for a while. When you get bigger you'll have to consider moving to a server in Russia, Hong Kong, China etc but that's a good bit away yet.

I have a friend who already has a site of this nature, and he is hosted on a cheap VPS in the US and has yet to receive any problems. Is it that risky or would I be okay if I chose a similar option?

Yes I agree but why then some big Anime Streaming websites got shut down by companies such as Funimation even if they were just linking from Megavideo etc.?
