I have yet to run a vBulletin 3.8.x forum and im heariing of forums being defaced..
and im gettting worried because my knowledge of php or programming
is extremely limited

What steps to follow?
strong password? Limit the amount of mods?
A nulled vbulletin is untrustworthy ? Is an legit one more hacker proof?

the PHPBB3 bit I can't help u with as I've always used vBulletin, an Nulled vBulletin is a no go area, as it can be hacked very easily.

Be careful what mods you install . Always update to latest version. Put a password on the /admin/ folder. or rename it

As for Vbulletin .. doesn't matter if it's nulled or legit .. it all depends on how well can you secure it. Stay away from dangerous mods ( most forums get exploited because of faulty mods )

im not planning to buy vbulletin

PHPBB3 its free i realise now ..and it must be safe if warez-bb runs on it why not use it for myself

Ya phpbb is free so if your not going to buy a vb licence I'd go with phpbb. Be extra safe by renaming admin file and password protecting it. As everyone said use only fully released mods and keep them current.

Sounds obvious but make sure you scan your own computer regularly too and keep it updated. No point having the most secure forum in the world if you key-logged.
