One Folder or No folder? what is the best for Seo?

Hello SEO friends,
Is fewer folders better for SEO?
Or say as an example:
example.com/merchant/nike
Or
example.com/nike
the goal being of course to position yourself well on nike (it's just an example)

the shorter the better?
(I know that the notion of depth is also important)
or the fact that I sort my site by merchant/site is a good indicator for our friend google?
I can't find any sources that settle this question.

The URL for SEO should not be more than 75 characters. So folders should be made accordingly.

Actually these small details do not matter much with nowadays Google and other search engine algorithms, still I would say that keyword in the URL is more important than a folder and no folder, and the page name that is readable and according to the content of the page and as much short as it can be (means no folder) is always better, though really having a folder or no folder does not have an impact.
