I love martial arts, and I wanted to see if anyone else on WJ is interested in them.
I've studied in Jinenkan which is a mix of Ninjitsu, Aikido and Kendo with other weapons training as well. I took that for a little over a year but now I've moved on to study with two living legends in martial arts:

Guro/Sifu Dan Inosanto

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnVhEQ9hJJk

(the intro to one of his many DVDs, he's over 73 years old now and still fighting and teaching!!!)

Yori Nakamura

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ox_lMMZrGPo
<-- shooto lock flows
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smDrrLppVgc
<-- demonstrating silat forms and how they are used against an opponent, this one is awesome
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJPnbf6wJ08
<-- demonstrating Jeet Kune Do.. this one is a MUST SEE!!!!

These are the martial arts I'm going to be training in (focusing on Silat in all of its forms, Kali and other FMA, and Jeet Kune Do)

-Jeet Kuen
-The Martial Legacy/The Intercepting Way
-Kali
-Eskrima
-muay thai
-boxing
-boxe fraincaise-savate
-pentjak silat
-kuntaw silat
-bersilat
-maphilindo silat
-shoot wrestling (shooto)
-capoeira
-bando
-krabi krabong
-combat submission wrestling
-vale tudo
-jiu-jitsu (brazilian and japanese)
I've started training with the Kali sticks (as shown in the first inosanto video) and it is absolutely DESTROYING my hands.

I'm also starting to condition my body to fight again as in knuckle conditioning, forearm conditioning, elbow conditioning etc.

(if you don't know what this means, it means I'm beating those parts repeatedly throughout the day until I can't take the pain anymore, wait for it to wear off, then do it again and again).

The saddest thing is that I lost all of my kicking skills. I used to be able to kick someone in the head who is as tall or taller than me (I'm 6'1") from 2-3 feet away. Now I can only do groin/stomach kicks really. It's so sad lol.

Anyways, share some cool martial arts videos, your favorite movies, what you train in, etc. in this topic!

Movie recommendations:

thai movies:

Ong Bak 1&2
Chocolate
The Protector
Chinese:
Every single Bruce Lee film

Every Chinese Jackie Chan film

Any questions about a certain martial arts style/system? Feel free to ask!

MMA doesn't mean anything though, really. It's like just saying "Kung Fu" or "Martial Arts" you know?

But most professional MMA fighters seem to train in a mix of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Thai Boxing, and one other open-hand focused martial art like Karate-Do or Tae Kwon Do or Hapkido

I'm very interested in all kinds of Martial Arts, if you guys know of any that I might not have heard of please share :)

I'm especially interested in Martial Arts that have come out of India because I only know of one and it is primarily used for show now, not actual utility.

A lot of skills from Yoga transfer over to martial arts so I would think that they'd be prevalent.

Thats why MMA fighters know all those kinds of techniques, nice thread (y)
Thanks :))

However, I think you'd be surprised at how few MMA fighters train in FMA (Filipino Martial Arts) or IMA (Indonesian Martial Arts also known as Majapahit or Silat) due to the sheer deadliness of the strikes. These martial arts were never designed for sport, there were designed for the street and for military.

I'd have a really hard time in a cage fight because I'd be throwing throat jabs, headbutts, elbows to the throat and eyes, finger manipulation, groin strikes, etc. All of which are illegal in most MMA leagues.

Most JKD moves would be illegal in competition as well, and all of the moves I learned in my previous martial arts training would be completely illegal as they are pressure point focused "dirty" strikes intended to drop a target in as few blows as possible, and running up to someone with a flying knee to the groin, a quick throat jab (open handed for maximum contact with the trachea), followed by eye gouging, arm breaking takedowns, or leg breaking moves just couldn't happen, and that's all I know how to do.

Therefore I have to train for a while before I'll be able to spar or anything with people at the gym because you must be able to show that you can control your strikes and their power.

LOL that's awesome peanut

ya know Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee worked together on a film, but Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto were really good friends and trained together for years. Dan Inosanto is the last living teacher of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do, how awesome is that?

He tells stories about him and Bruce Lee all the time, it's pretty cool

Here's a Tip to help you develop more powerful, fluid, and quick punches:

Stay Relaxed and Loose

A relaxed strike is a powerful strike. That concept is simple to grasp but very difficult to put into action. When anger, fear, fatigue and other emotions kick in during a fight, the body often tenses up making ultra-powerful punching very difficult. A fighter’s lack of experience or lack of technical training often results in them throwing stiff, slow, laboured punches. Even worse the telegraphed punches they attack with are usually thrown by themselves, not within a combination that could drastically increase any chances of scoring a knockout.

In training, think of your arm as two different parts, the fist and the arm. The arm must take on the attributes of a piece of rope, hanging loose as it swings to and from your upper body. Alternately the fist must tighten, with its thumb on the outside, remaining clenched as if it were an iron ball hanging from that rope. At first you will find this extremely challenging to do and you’ll quickly realize that it’s going to take a lot of practice and focus to get things just right. As you tighten your hand you will often feel your entire arm tighten and vice versa with your hand becoming too loose when you allow your arm to relax. Just keep trying!

You’ll know when you get it right because you will instantly multiply the power of you punch and lessen the amount of effort it takes to throw it. That’s when your true punching power will begin to emerge.
