ok so when you start a new site - what do you do?

do you draw up a business plan - write things down? use bullet points?

or just do it of your head

what do you actually do?

SEO? (if so what?)
Buy Links?
Content?

etc
etc

be as detailed as possible so people can use this as a guide!

1. make it look good
2. seo it
3. add unique content
4. promote it

each step can be split up into loads of sub-steps but I'd rather not go into that (:

"Just build a site until you are satisfied." -- I don't agree with this, "you" aren't the only one visiting the site, there are others. Ask your guests/members for suggestions/comments etc. Make them satisfied as well as yourself. If you're looking for a "deep guide", look for whoo's guide. :)

Think long and hard first if the site is really needed and be useful to anyone. If it's just another warez site like every other then their's no need to continue. If I have a genuine idea or unique feature that nobody has and will bring traffic I continue with design, coding, testing, optimizing, beta launch, initial feedback, redesign, further testing, bug fix, main launch, and then from here on minor tweaks and updates.
Once I've done the main launch I start advertising. All SEO work has being done through out the design. SEO should never be an after thought but integrated from the beginning.
I never just launch a site that's just an installed script with an added skin and always wait till I've added as many of the features I want as possible. I consider it embarrassing when people have to suggest basic mods that should have being added already.

I meant it as, you want your users to download x, so provide x. You want your users to be happy by getting accounts, so provide accounts :)
Building a site until you are satisfied, doesn't mean it's made to your needs. It means you are overall happy with the site itself, which (can) also include user-friendlyness etc. Or maybe you want to make big $, so don't make it user friendly and place it full with ads.

I tend to shoot the ideas at friends online and offline, we then can a lil while discussing the cons of it

we then check out competition and keywords, how seo the names and idea is

if then its a good idea we create some sample sites and drawings of design and then discuss domain names

once we purchased the domain we get building the application(script/design/seo) on localhost

we then upload to a temp location and check security issues and benchmark stuff.
we then set up analytics and google webmasters along with yahoo, bling and others

we ask for others opinions from people to see what they think and after we do some promoting :)

peace
