Mohammad Azharuddin was an accomplished batsman and captained the Indian cricket team for much of the 1990s, until his involvement in a match-fixing scandal forced him into retirement. A member of the Indian National Congress, Azharuddin won election from the Moradabad constituency of Uttar Pradesh to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Parliament of India.
His son Ayaz, aged 19 years, died on 16 September 2011, after succumbing to serious injuries sustained in a bike accident after 5 days. He was riding with his cousin Ajmal-ur-rahman, who died on the spot.

Hyderabad Apollo hospital confirmed the news Ayazuddin's death. Mother Naureen, Azharuddin, Sangeeta Bijlani and other close relatives were present at the hospital when Ayazuddin breathed his last.
A gloomy atmosphere prevailed at the Banjara Hills residence where the body of Ayaz shifted.
Ayazuddin was admitted to Apollo hospital in a critical condition after a massive motorcycle crash on September 11.
The 19-year-old met with a massive accident when he lost control over brand new his sports bike Suzuki GSX R100 at the Outer Ring Road.
In the road accident his 16-year-old cousin Ajmal-ur-Rahman, who was pillion rider, was died on the spot.
In the bike crash, Ayazuddin, an emerging cricketer, was left with the serious brain injuries and internal bleeding in his abdominal and chest.
On September 15, doctors had conducted electroencephalogram (EEG) examinations to know the brain functioning of Ayazuddin.
